I receive this yesterday from a friend. It chronicles his attempts to obtain dial-up software for a client of his from Earthlink since he had Broadband and could download the software to give them… or so he thought.

info: Welcome to Earthlink LiveChat. Your chat session will begin shortly.

info: ‘Seth of Earthlink.’ says: Thank you for contacting EarthLink LiveChat, how may I help you today?

Chris: I have a client that runs Win98SE, is there a place I can download the full install for the dial-up software?
Chris: also, your chat program here is really buggy

Seth of Earthlink.: Please hold on, while I go through the issue.
Seth of Earthlink.: Thanks for holding.
Seth of Earthlink.: You can download Total Access software from below given link.
Seth of Earthlink.: http://www.earthlink.net/software/

Chris: that doesn’t help me
Chris: I need the full download of the dial-up software
Chris: not the partial one that downloads separately

Seth of Earthlink.: Total Access is a complete dial-up software.

Chris: I am aware of that
Chris: but the installation program is not complete
Chris: I have a highspeed connection here, they do not. They cannot leave their dialup connection on long enough to download the software package

Seth of Earthlink.: Please clarify if you wish to connect to Internet using high speed connection or dialup connection.

Chris: I have a high speed connection, my client who is a subscriber to EarthLink, uses dial-up
Chris: I need to download the full installation of the dialup software for them because they can’t
Chris: so the “download a small amount and that program will download the rest” won’t work

Seth of Earthlink.: Let me know the website from which you have downloaded software.

Chris: I have not.
Chris: That is why I’m talking to you
Chris: I’m trying to find out where to get that installation from

Seth of Earthlink.: Please click on below link and download Total Access software.
Seth of Earthlink.: http://www.earthlink.net/software/

Chris: ok you already gave me that link, and I already mentioned that what I need is not there
Chris: is there someone else you can transfer me to that might actually pay attention to what I’m asking?

Seth of Earthlink.: Let me know the dial up software that you are referring to.

Chris: I already have
Chris: An Earthlink dialup subscriber needs the dialup software
Chris: I want to provide that to them, but as one installation, not one that has to download files separately
Chris: IE I need the TotalAccess software that is one big file instead of a bunch of small ones

Seth of Earthlink.: Okay. Then you can create manual dialer and connect to Internet.

Chris: You apparently missed where I said twice that they can’t leave the connection on long enough to download a large amount of data

Seth of Earthlink.: You can use the instructions below as a guide to configuring a new EarthLink connection on your computer:

Cut for length, believe me, they were long!

If you would like a copy of these instructions emailed to you, the option will be presented in the survey that appears when you close this chat window. You can then review the email via http://www.earthlink.net/webmail [2]. Of course, if you have any further questions, please feel free to ask them before closing this window.

Chris: Which is why I want to download the software for them so they can use it without any additional downloads
Chris: That was completely useless, but thanks.
Chris: I don’t think you are paying attention

Seth of Earthlink.: I am so sorry.
Seth of Earthlink.: Give me a moment.
Seth of Earthlink.: I infer you wish to have TotalAccess software complete download. If you wish, I’ll order a CD for you.

Chris: That is exactly what I need, but instead of a CD I’d like to download the software so I can burn my own CD

Seth of Earthlink.: Sorry. It is not possible to burn the software on CD.

Chris: If I downloaded the software I could burn it to a CD with my CD Burner
Chris: it would save the time and expenses of mailing the CD

Seth of Earthlink.: No. Total Access software will not work if it is burnt on CD.

Chris: If I had the full download it would be the same as the CD you would mail to me, except it would be a whole lot faster

Chris: I’m not trying to run the software off the CD, I want to download the installer, burn it to a CD, and then install it on the client’s machine from the CD

Seth of Earthlink.: Okay. Then try to download Total Access and burn on CD.

Chris: Maybe I should just have my client switch to AOL, I’m able to get what I need from them

Seth of Earthlink.: Please clarify what exactly you are referring to.

Chris: Please reread our conversation, my requirements have not changed since I started this conversation, and if you still can’t figure out what I’m trying to do, then maybe you should consider a career change.
